Aims, contents and method of the course

The course delivers an overview on central processes of monetary integration and disintegration in the post-Napoleonic era with a focus on governance structures.

Course outline:
Monetary theory and monetary economics and definitions (silver and gold standard, bi-metallism, flexible and fixed exchange rates, optimal currency area, Triffin paradox.
Monetary cooperation and unions in post-Napoleonic Europe
From Silver to Gold.
Breakdown of the gold standard in early 20th century, implementation and predominance of paper money, inflation and an episode of gold standard between the two world wars.
Bretton Woods era
On the way to the Euro zone.
Monetary outcomes of the breakdown of the Commecon.
Monetary integration outside of Europe.

Assessment and permitted materials

Term paper and presentation, and regular attendance, of course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Term papers can be written in German, English and French.
Guidelines for term papers are available in Moodle.

0-49 points = not passed
50-66 = 4,0
