Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims to elaborate the increasing governmental tasks and functions in Europe since the late Middle Ages until the present. In detail, these were/are: Extension of the traditional state monopolies, including the growing military complex, as well as the numerous economic and later also socio-political expenditures. The raising of new funds was and is connected with innovative measures in fiscalisation, taxation and public borrowing. The latter led to the creation of special capital markets, stock exchanges, new intermediary functions of private banks. New ways also were found in cooperation with central banks. The innovative solutions which were developed in the state sector were repeatedly confronted with financial crises and state insolvencies. These phenomena are also subject of our investigation.
