Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide students with a solid understanding of the preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with the Austrian Commercial Code (UGB). Students will be enabled to prepare a complete set of financial statements starting from a trial balance, to assess individual balance sheet items appropriately, and to correctly apply the statutory recognition, measurement, and presentation requirements.

Course Content

The course systematically covers the process from the trial balance to the annual financial statements in accordance with the UGB, with a focus on the main balance sheet items:

Part 1: From the trial balance to the annual financial statements

Part 2: Non-current assets (recognition, measurement, depreciation)

Part 3: Current assets (measurement, impairment)

Part 4: Accruals and deferrals

Part 5: Liabilities

Part 6: Provisions

Part 7: Equity

The relevant legal provisions of the Austrian Commercial Code (UGB), typical practical cases, and issues of classification and distinction are addressed throughout the course.

Teaching Method

The course content is delivered in the form of lectures combined with integrated examples and exercises. Practical case studies are used to deepen the application of statutory requirements and to enhance students’ understanding of accounting relationships.

Assessment and permitted materials

The grade is based entirely on a multiple-choice final exam (closed-book, paper-and-pencil format).
The exam questions consist of practical calculation and application problems related to financial accounting. For each question, you will be provided with a set of answer options, only one of which is correct.
The duration of the exam is 60 minutes.
The only permitted aids are pocket calculators and texts of laws/statutes.
Important: Please observe the registration and cancellation deadlines for the respective exam dates! No late registrations or cancellations will be accepted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A total of 60 points can be achieved. The grading scale of the University of Vienna is applied based on the number of points obtained.

Examination topics

The subject areas taught in the lecture, including the exercise examples, are examination subjects.
