Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students develop understanding of the basic functionality of database systems and are enabled to design and query databases, to use data base systems in application development and to integrate databases into programs. The course covers the theoretical basis of relational databases, problems of multiuser access and their fundamental solutions. Practical tasks deepen the understanding and skills needed to use database systems for the implementation of programs and applications.The course covers the following topics:- Introduction, Basic Terms and Presentations- Fundamentals of Logical Data Organization, Relational Model- Database Languages (focus SQL)- Integrity and Security- Conceptual Modeling - Physical Data Organization, Memory-, File- and Index-Structures- Query Processing and Optimization- Transactions and Recovery- Programming with Database SystemsThe course consists of two parts:- Theoretical Part: lecture each Tuesday, 13:15 - 14:45, (presence not mandatory)- Practical Part: weekly, date and time specific to group (presence mandatory)

Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge in Modelling as well as in Algorithms and Data Structures is assumed. Catching up on missing knowledge through self study is relatively easy.

Assessment and permitted materials

In each part (theoretical and practical) there is a maximum of 50 marks achievable. The grade is derived from the sum of the two parts (i.e. a maximum of 100 marks in total).

There are three possibilities to achieve marks:
- theoretical test (no aids allowed, 50 marks max.)
- presentation of solved homework tasks and participation in the practical part (20 marks max.)
- hand in and presentation of a self developed project (30 marks max.)

Knockout criteria are:
- hand in and presentation of a project
- at least 15 marks at the theoretical test

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive grade the knockout criteria have to be fulfilled and a total of at least 50 marks has to be achieved. The grade is calculated from the total marks as follows:
Sehr Gut [100-87.5],
Gut ]87.5-75],
Befriedigend ]75-62.5],
Genügend ]62.5-50],
Nicht Genügend ]50-0]
