Aims, contents and method of the course

Since the Babylonian Exile significant Jewish populations lived outside of Judah. Jews settled in many parts of the Roman empire. In antiquity, the Jewish diaspora developed religious and cultural concepts and ideas which influence Judaism as of today and which allowed for its survival until the state of Israel was founded.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Until the time of the Arab conquest, this seminar wants to familiarize you with the history of the ancient Jewish diaspora, as well as with its culture, literature, and religion. We will also introduce you to key source texts.
