Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course provides an approximation to the major biblical collection of poetry, the book of the Psalms. In a first part we will focus on reading, translation, analysis, and discussion of selected psalms and we will deal with questions such as implied authorship, structure, genre, Sitz im Leben, semantic and compositional aspects, inner-biblical exegesis. In a second part we will turn to the reception history of the psalter in Judaism and Christianity. We shall read selected Jewish and Christian texts in which the psalms are used or commented upon, e.g. rabbinic texts about the psalms, excerpts from Midrash Tehillim and the New Testament.
