Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture gives an overview of the High and Late Middle Ages from an archaeological perspective. After phases of transformations and new formations in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, a phase of consolidation lasting about 500 years begins, which is also characterized by numerous innovations. It is also a time in which the first urbanisation in the Middle Ages can be observed. Students are given an overview of the developments from the 9th/10th century to the 15th/16th century in various types regarding rural and urban settlements or grave findings. In addition, social and religious structures are discussed. Via powerpoint presentations (provided on Moodle) the students receive basic information concerning the lecture. In addition, bibliographical references are given for follow-up work or as preparation for the written exam (Klausur) in the last lecture unit.
