Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

1. The First World War as a turning point in history.
2. Eastern Europe in the interwar period: the system of international relations, political systems, ideologies, cultural, social and economic developments, horizontal and vertical mobilities.
3. The crisis of 1938/39 and the Second World War.
4. The genesis of the cold war and the division of Europe.
5. Unity in the variety: the “Eastern block” 1945-1989 in the context of international relations and broad political, cultural and economic developments.
6. The year 1989 and the transformation process in Eastern Europe in the international context.

Assessment and permitted materials

A two-hour written test examining the knowledge and the understanding capacities of the students.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of the lecture is to convey fundamental knowledge on contemporary history in international comparison with special consideration of the history of Eastern Europe from the First World War to the transformation after the fall of communism.

Examination topics

The students should be introduced to the main questions of historical research and the current scientific narratives. The lecture should make the students capable to recognize the historical dimension of the phenomena of the present, to procede by means of structural analysis, contextualisation and reflection of historical continuities and discontinuities.
