Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The colors and their history seem to be primarily a theme that is resorted to in art history. But especially with Stephan Selzer's habilitation from 2010 on the color "blue", it became clear that colors also have a historical meaning against the background of the "material turn". The trend-setting text by Hans Medick (1993) on the color green - one of the basic texts of micro-history and proto-industrialization research - underlines this even more. Colors can be viewed from the perspective of color psychology, from the perspective of the historical use of colors (dyes, color trade, color production, dyeing, organic/inorganic production). Colors are of crucial importance for the clothing trade and for the craft of the dyers (as can be well shown by the example of Erfurt and the woad production). Colors were subject to strong changes, the portraits of the 16th century mostly know black dress colors. Revolutions like the French or the Russian Revolution also used their own color scheme. Against this background, the proposed event sees itself as a contribution to the economic, cultural, artistic, craft, colonial and mental history of Europe from the Middle Ages to the present.
