Continuous assessment of course work

Montag, 14:15 bis 15:45 Uhr im Büro von Prof. Buc. Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung, Stiege 10, 1. Stock.

The Milanese Pataria, 1057-1075.
The so-called Pataria may be seen as the first religious revolution of the Western middle ages. It can also be seen as its first social revolution, insofar as commoners asserted their right to participate in the governance of the city (over religious matters). This violent reform movement principally active in Milan (Italy) between circa 1057 and circa 1130 sought to purify the local clergy.

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Milanese Pataria, 1057-1075.
The so-called Pataria may be seen as the first religious revolution of the Western middle ages. It can also be seen as its first social revolution, insofar as commoners asserted their right to participate in the governance of the city (over religious matters). This violent reform movement principally active in Milan (Italy) between circa 1057 and circa 1130 sought to purify the local clergy.

We will read contemporary sources (in Latin) of the first phase of the conflict (1057-1075), notably the Vita Arialdi (the life of the priest Ariald, a leader of the movement, martyred by his enemies (1066); the Liber gestorum recentium, penned by an opponent of the Pataria, Arnulf of Milan (finished shortly after Canossa, 1077); and the Historia Mediolanensis once attributed to one Landulf Senior (excerpts). All these sources are availanle through Moodle.

Assessment and permitted materials

Two written papers (instead of the final exam), the second with a first draft, and vigorous engagement in the seminar every week. The first paper will be very short.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A first aim of the course is to sensitize students to authorial intentions and narrative techniques. How does one write about conflict, and manage conflict through writings? But, second, understanding of the narrative techniques also gives a more secure point of entry into actual political culture -- how the Milanese actually mobilized themselves and fought.

Examination topics

Close readings and seminar discussion.
