Aims, contents and method of the course

Since the monography is no longer the primery medium for constructing historical images historians and history teachers are in charge of adapting technique and learning with and within different sorts of media: television, movies, internet and videogames challenge the public way of viewing history. Historians and history students need to prepare themselves with methods of reflecting and integrating new media and therefore a concept of the construction of history. Especially the internet leeds to a comeback of oral tradtions of history telling which shall be considered and incorporated by modern historians in their work.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance, cooperation and 3 exercises (1) Wrting a paper debating pros and cons of differing media and its use in school history classes (10.000 signs) (2) Teamwork: Making interviews and adapting movie clips for an onlinevideo for specific historical topic and presenting it in social media - afterwords also reflect reactions and description of the project (5000 signs) (3) Reflections on video-games: how do they contribute to historical images and historical understanding? Presentation and Text (5000 signs)
