Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

A survey of different source genres and issues covering ca. 300 to ca. 1500 C.E. The issues have been chosen for their variety, so as to accompany the lecture classes that cover the same period. We shall read and analyze, for example, martyrdom stories, documents about Constantine, the Beowulf, the old French Song of Roland, and courtly romances.
It is advised to take with this class my survey lecture class -- 2018S 070117-1 History of the Middle Ages, taught Mondays, 11:30-13:00 (and exceptionally Wednesday 14.03 09:45-11:15). But it is not necessary.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular writing (about 9 2-page papers for 90% of the grade) and constructive participation in the class discussion (10%) .
