Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will be introduced to a wide range of translated source material for the history of the medieval Christian Near East, from the adoption of Christianity by Rome in the 4th century up to the fall of the Armeno-Frankish Kingdom of Cilicia in the late 14th century. The texts are taken from historical sources written originally in Greek, Persian, Armenian, Syrian, Arabic, or Slavonic. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the variety of source material from this region, and will be equipped to read sources and academic texts systematically, summarise them meaningfully and analyse them critically.

Assessment and permitted materials

Preparation of the weekly readings; attendance and active participation in class discussions; regular short written essays. During the first class we will discuss appropriate uses of generative AI in the class context, and set rules and boundaries for its use.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students are expected to prepare for a discussion of the readings each week, to participate adequately in the discussions (20% of overall grade), and to complete ten short written assignments over the course of the semester (80% of overall grade). Written work may be submitted in either English or German.

100 – 88%: sehr gut
87 – 75%: gut
74 – 63%: befriedigend
62 – 51%: genügend
50% or less: nicht genügend

Examination topics

The focus of the written work will be the source material that will be presented via the course Moodle.

Reading list
