Anglo-American historiography of pre-modern Europe has been fertilized by the social sciences, by anthropology, and by cultural theory. The class will familiarize the students with some of the more interesting positions around such themes as power & authority, conflict and violence, coercion (including religious coercion), and religious deviance.

Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Weekly paper (2 pages) on the reading of the week (which paper can be written in either English, German, or French), delivered electronically ahead of the weekly meeting to the instructor; engaged class discussion in English or German. No final exam, no final paper.

The students read English-language scholarship, write (and get feedback), and debate in class.
