070196 VO History of the Middle Ages, ca. 300 to ca. 1500 (2015W)

5.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 7 - Geschichte

The course gives a problem-oriented survey over the period from around 400 to 1500 AD and the development of Europe in this time and tries to consider the most fundamental social, cultural and political aspects of the medieval world. The economy is in the main approached through the textbook. It is highly recommended to pair this lecture class with Buc's Guided Reading, or the very similar one taught by Magistra Alexandra Kaar.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Assessment and permitted materials

Final exam in three parts based on my lectures (that are streamed) : identification of images and terms discussed in lecture (20 points), synthetic question (50 points)
and on the textbook (30 points, that part of the exam is eliminatory, under 16 points you fail the exam).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge of European history in the Middle Ages, with a sense of how historians think and approach problems.

Examination topics

Lecture with additional readings (including a textbook), questions during lectures or through email welcome. The lectures will be streamed (for those who will not attend physically, it is recommended not to wait to right before the exam to access them).
