Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Regular attendance and active participation in class discussions, based on the assigned weekly tasks (reading, discovery of the archive, and work with primary sources), are essential. Students are expected to be prepared for the classwork. In addition, each student will deliver one oral presentation on a selected source and submit an analytical essay (8 pages), dealing with primary sources and research methods.
Students are also welcome to attend any Holocaust-related event (preferably with a focus on Eastern Europe), whether online or offline, including lectures, book presentations, seminars, workshops, and open exhibitions. Such events will be regularly announced and posted on Moodle.The final grade will be based on the following components:
• Regular attendance (maximum of two absences) and participation in discussions (25%)
• Submission of written assignments (20%)
• Holocaust related event attendance (10%)
• Oral presentation (15%)
• Short written assignments (30%)
Students are also welcome to attend any Holocaust-related event (preferably with a focus on Eastern Europe), whether online or offline, including lectures, book presentations, seminars, workshops, and open exhibitions. There is no exam for this course. Students are asked to do the relevant assignments during the semester.

This course introduces students to contemporary approaches to source use and methodology in Holocaust studies focused on Eastern Europe. Through close engagement with key archives and source collections, students will work with a wide range of materials, including official documents, administrative records, survivor testimonies, memoirs, photographs, and other visual and material sources. The course emphasizes both qualitative and quantitative methods, training students to critically assess the possibilities and limitations of different types of evidence.
Covering a broad geographical range—including the Baltic states, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Greece, and Romania—the course enables comparative analysis of the Holocaust across different national and regional contexts. Particular attention is paid to how local conditions shaped both the course of the Holocaust and the nature, survival, and accessibility of its sources.
