Aims, contents and method of the course

How do we write history? The question itself was asked by many historians, who reflected critically on their methods, narratives, and epistemological assumptions. The course will examine how (hi-)stories were written, questioning the textual fabric of narratives about the past. To do so, students will be introduced to fundamental texts, authors, and historical methodologies, and will read primary texts and papers from the secondary literature (all available in English translations). Particular emphasis will be given to key notions such as “actors”, “events”, and historical “facts”.
By the end of the semester, students will be able to identify the main historiographical trends and periods (ancient and medieval historiography, humanism, Enlightenment, historicism, Marxism, Annales, school, microhistory, social history, historical anthropology, women's and gender history). They will be able to recognize the narrative in a historical text and engage critically with it.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to read all the assigned texts before each class, and to prepare each time a Leseprotokoll. They are expected to actively contribute to class discussion and to timely deliver short written assignments. These assignments can be written in German, English, or French.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular attendance (maximum of two unjustified absences) and active participation: 25%
Submission of written summaries (Leseprotokoll) and written assignments: 50%
Oral presentation: 25%

Grading Scale
90–100 points → Excellent (Sehr gut – 1)
81–89 points → Good (Gut – 2)
71–80 points → Satisfactory (Befriedigend – 3)
60–70 points → Sufficient (Genügend – 4)
0–59 points → Insufficient (Nicht genügend – 5)
