Practice of Scientific Communication: Digital Games and History
(Praxis der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation: Digitale Spiele und Geschichtswissenschaften)

This course offers an introduction into digital games as (cultural) artifacts and objects of scientific study. There will be both on-site and blended learning sessions (see requirements).

If there are compelling reasons why you cannot research digital games, please send me a mail and we will figure something out (card games etc.).

Aims, contents and method of the course

Course goals

* This course offers an introduction into digital games as (cultural) artifacts and objects of scientific study
* This course introduces you to aspects and elements of scientific communication
* This course explores researching, writing and presenting scientific information

Course objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to

* identify and describe the different types of relevant scientific communication
* follow and communicate scientific arguments
* describe digital tools for archiving, organising and enriching sources and artifacts
* write a scientific text and present it in class and in writing
* give feedback to fellow students of history
* describe methods to deal with writer's block and other problems during the writing process
* identify the fitting medium and the right audience for given scientific texts

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation, short feedback text, presentation, final paper (25000 characters with blanks)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will need access to a computer and the internet (e.g. Univ. Vienna Computer Labs).
