Aims, contents and method of the course

The transition from the urban network of the Late Roman Empire though the complex system of Medieval cities and towns to the urban network of modern Europe is by no means straightforward or self-evident. This lecture course will offer an overview of this development, highlighting the points of continuity and rupture. Diverse aspects of urban life such as demographic patterns, family structures, institutions of urban government, economy and trade, urban groups and their divisions and conflicts, and planning initiatives will be analyzed. The spatial development, the physical and social topography of cities and towns will be explored in their greater geographical, political, social and cultural context. Particular emphasis will be paid on the European periphery, the role of the colonial development and the place of Eastern Europe in the greater narrative of European urban growth. The most important interpretations and debates in historiography of European cities and towns from the early Middle Ages to the present time will be discussed.
