Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The MA Seminar is designed to accompany the students along the research process leading to their MA thesis. To this end, each session will provide a platform for extensive reflections on broad methodological and theoretical issues, such as: structuring the thesis (and then each chapter and section); the finding of an appropriate title and a strong research question; addressing periodization and spatiality; the construction of the narrative.

The teaching language is English, but the students can write their MA theses in English or German (and Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch and Portuguese, if applicable).
The readings are in English and eventually in German.

Assessment and permitted materials

The sessions will include:
 Group discussion and collective discussion of the issues foregrounded in the session (in some cases, with the support of scholarly texts)
 Group and collective discussions of the drafts produced by the students.
 Oral presentations in a conference-like setting in order to discuss the context, research question and main hypotheses of the papers (sessions in December).
 Feedback and discussion of the papers (14 January 2025)

In the final part of the course, the students will present their research and sources orally as part of conference-like thematic panels, with the aim to receive further feedback and sharpen their own arguments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Read the assigned texts (compulsory) – 10%
• Participate actively in classroom discussions – 30%
• Present the key ideas of your paper orally – 20%
• Work on and discuss your MA thesis – 40%
