Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Medieval men lived in a natural environment which was still overwhelmingly present in the landscape but about which they knew relatively little and on which they had even less influence. Climatic change has been an issue of debate since some decades; more recently, new scientific techniques have provided important data which innovated the historians’ research agenda. Growth and decrease of the agrarian production, and the availability of particular crops, depended on the variation of the climate on the long as well as on the short term. Biological factors equally had a strong impact on the conditions of human life, such as the spread of diseases among animal populations and their dissemination among humans. On the other hand, migrations and mutations of animal populations could have beneficial effects on the quality of human life.
Target: insight in the complex interactions between human, animal and physical conditions of their environment. Historians depend on new scientific research techniques by which new types of data are collected. As this type of problems is relatively new in historiography, lively debates are to be assessed.
