Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture will examine the question of which concepts of masculinity have been produced, reproduced and deconstructed in art and art history since the 1960s. Drawing upon the contributions of Änne Söll, Maike Wagner and Katharina Boje, the lecture posits the notion that since the 1960s, art has been 'producing contradictory images of masculinities [...] that feed on social discourses' and, in turn, 'have an impact on them'. In conjunction with discourses and critical theories, including those on queerness and intersectionality, but also on toxic masculinity, petromasculinity and new right-wing masculinist identity politics, the lecture therefore examines how masculinities manifest themselves: in the figure of the artist, in art education, in artworks, in production techniques and materials, in exhibition situations, and in art history itself. The objective of the lecture is twofold: firstly, to provide a historical overview of the engagement with masculinities in art and, secondly, to introduce the reader to the basics of masculinity research in art history from 1960 to the present day.
