Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we will learn different methods of ethnographic research through and about the digital. The digital for us is at the same time the digitalization of our everyday life as well as the digital techniques and tools we can use in research. Through classic readings of early ethnographies on the Internet (cf. Boellstorff, Turkle, etc.), as well as handbooks and critical texts on methodology, we trace the evolution of cultural anthropology's engagement with the expanding digitization of our lifeworlds. As part of the course, participants conduct individual short research projects through which they try out and experience the methods and problematics of digital ethnography. In this way, we will practice critical reflection on the possibilities of digital ethnographic research and possibly gain new insights into the meaning and forms of the digital in everyday life.
