Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Light switches, purple overalls, iPods, Labubus—things that shape our everyday lives and, through their materiality, define our actions, symbolize political attitudes, shape our bodies, materialize the immaterial, become distinctive signs, and fuel our passion for collecting. Everyday culture is material, and materiality defines our everyday lives: without objects, infrastructures, and bodies, everyday life is simply inconceivable. The question of what role material culture(s) and materialities play in everyday life and how ways of life, epistemic orders, and socially negotiated systems of meaning are materially reflected has been a concern of European ethnology scholars since its very beginnings – as has the desire to collect and preserve material culture. The lecture provides an overview of cultural studies approaches to material culture(s). It presents classical and contemporary theoretical perspectives on material culture and shows in which specific fields of research they can be found.
