Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on manuscript, album, wall, and canvas paintings produced in the Ottoman Empire from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century. It offers a study of paintings, drawings, and calligraphy in illustrated histories, genealogies, poetic and literary texts, maps, and religious works, as well as of album production, murals depicting architecture and landscape, and oil portraits of sultans. The course aims to equip students with skills to examine different media, stylistic influences, motives of patronage, and regional diversity.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course requires the active contribution of students, in which they present selected readings, ask critical questions, and lead discussions. It is a course with continuous assessment, which also includes a final research paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular attendance, critical approach to sources, basic terminological knowledge, and participation in discussions.
