Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture aims to provide an introduction to the study of Byzantium – an empire of rare longevity (4th–15th centuries) and remarkable resilience. This resilience enabled the empire to regenerate and reinvent itself following several momentous events. This introduction aims, on the one hand, to familiarise participants with the key aspects of Byzantine civilisation (the imperial court, the role of the capital Constantinople, its worldview and value system, and its relationship with antiquity and Christianity) and the major phases of a thousand years of Byzantine history. It also aims to present the various approaches and methods used in the study of Byzantium, whether based on material and visual culture (art history, sigillography, numismatics, archaeology) or on texts and documents (social and political history, intellectual history and philosophy, theology, the history of science and literature).
