Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course serves to convey a basic scientific understanding and to introduce students to the scientific working methods of Classical Archaeology. These are presented in detail in a subject-specific manner and should be learned through practical exercises. Topics covered include research in library catalogs and image databases, topic-related bibliography, the application of formal criteria for the preparation of archaeological scientific papers, but also texts of other minor genres and the critical handling of specialist literature.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance in the sessions and active participation in the discussions including the completion of oral and written assignments with the help of the presented, relevant catalogs, databases and internet homepages.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is intended to teach the basic working techniques of the subject “Classical Archaeology”, which are required for writing a scientific text (presentation, term paper, thesis): Bibliography, correct citation of secondary literature and sources, setting footnotes or annotations, image research (including image rights) and critical use of specialist literature and internet resources. This should be understood receptively and actively applied by the participants in order to master the writing of a scientific text, which can also be published, in the further course of their studies. Therefore, students who are absent more than three times (with apologies) can no longer be assessed adequately.

Examination topics

Theoretical introduction, practical tasks and in-depth discussion of the proposed solutions. As there will be no final exam, it is essential that the individual participants contribute to the lessons during the session.
