Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction and in-depth study of Byzantine monasticism: history of monasticism and its role in Byzantine society and politics. Introduction to the relevant sources: foundation charters (typika), testaments, hagiography, including material culture (visual represenations, archaeology). Focus on individual monasteries within the Byzantine cultural sphere.
No prerequisites. For interested and qualified students have the opportunity for additional reading of source texts in Byzantine Greek.

Assessment and permitted materials

aktive Teilnahme (30%), mündliche Vorstellung eines Quellentextes (20%), mündliches themenfokussiertes Referat (20%), schriftliche Arbeit von max. 3,500 Worten (30%)
