Aims, contents and method of the course

In diesem Seminar werden wir die Entwicklung der römisch-katholischen Gemeinschaften des osmanischen Reiches vom 16. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert verfolgen. Das Verwaltungssystem des Reiches basierte auf einer Unterteilung der religiösen Zugehörigkeit seiner Untertanen in verschiedene Konfessionen: Während die orthodoxen Christen nach den Muslimen die zweitßgrößte millet („konfessionelle Gemeinschaft“) bildeten, blieben die römischen Katholiken zeitlebens minoritär, verstreut in kleine städtischen und ländlichen Gemeinden und/oder Handelsgemeinschaften.
Ziel des Seminars ist es, ein Augenmerk auf die sich wandelnde Geschichte dieser Gemeinden und Gemeinschaften zu werfen, um die kulturelle Vielfalt der osmanischen Gesellschaft und die sich wandelnde Natur und Hybridität religiöser und ethnischer Identitäten zu untersuchen, sowie die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen den christlichen Kirchen im Zuge des Falles Konstantinopels und der Reformation aufzuzeigen. Dies wird uns erlauben die turbulenten Beziehungen zwischen Europa und dem Orient, mit all den sozialen und kulturellen Widersprüchen, die zu den sich herausbildenden Nationalismen führten, zumindest teilweise zu erfassen beginnen.
