Aims, contents and method of the course

„Ich allein übte Philosophie in unphilosophischen Zeiten“, schrieb Michael Psellos über sich selbst. Psellos (1018–1078) zählt zweifellos zu den außergewöhnlichsten und faszinierendsten Denkern der byzantinischen Geistesgeschichte. Im Alter von 29 Jahren wurde er von Kaiser Konstantinos IX. Monomachos zum „Konsul der Philosophen“ (hypatos tôn philosophôn) ernannt – zu einer Zeit, in der die byzantinische Gesellschaft der Philosophie nur wenig Raum ließ. Doch was verstand Psellos unter Philosophie? Für ihn war sie ein umfassendes Konzept, das die gesamte Bandbreite der Wissenschaften einschloss: von Metaphysik und Physik über Mathematik und Psychologie bis hin zu Politik und Rhetorik. Demzufolge bedeutete Philosophieren für ihn, Wissen in all diesen Wissenschaften zu sammeln. Im Seminar nähern wir uns durch die Lektüre und Interpretation ausgewählter Texte, dem Denken eines Mannes, der sich selbst als Philosoph in unphilosophischen Zeiten verstand.
