Aims, contents and method of the course

What does the prospective and the advanced student in Modern Greek Studies in the second quarter of the 21st century read? How do anthologists choose? Presenting a reading list for at least six centuries of literary production is no small feat. This course discusses how canons are formed, how book fairs influence literary perceptions, how to use (which) translations (if necessary) before one gets started with original texts, how to read in a comparative mode. At the end of the course a series of texts (poetry and prose) will have been discussed, and a potential list of further reading should emerge in close collaboration among all participants. The course is directed to both beginners and advanced students who enjoy reading literature.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. A written essay of 3000 words to be submitted by June 10, 2026. The essay should be a commentary (text or image) on a novel, a short story, and a poem read during the course.
2. An open book written exam covering the texts discussed during the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements: Interest in discovering and discussing a great "small" European literary tradition and its vibrant present, very good English or German or Greek or French. Assessment criteria: ability to focus on a chosen text and produce a close reading; critical discussion.
