Aims, contents and method of the course

Close reading and discussion of the hagiographical texts relating to Athansios the Athonite, who is regarded as the founder of monasticism on Mount Athos

Assessment and permitted materials

oral participation, including the preparation of the weekly readings of the Greek text (70%), oral presentation (30%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Analysis of the relevant hagiographical texts as examples of Byzantine hagiography. Historical contextualization in the history of monasticism. Scrutiny of the role of Athanasios as a founding figure.
