Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to impart knowledge on the texts of Galician literature, based on childhood and adolescent memories. The goal is to provide insights into texts written in different historical periods and to develop as well competencies in this area among students. The course explains the current interpretation of Galicia as a model for a diverse society and presents new theoretical foundations. Most significant are theories that have gained importance in the course of Cultural Turns, such as Translational Turn and Spatial Turn. Particular attention will be paid to the concepts of heterogeneity and hybridity of cultural space; dialogicity, difference and transdifference; and the cultural-theoretical paradigm of similarity. We will discuss approaches of literary and cultural scientific memory and memory discourse as foundations of memory research by Aleida Assmann, autobiographical and philosophical writings by Walter Benjamin, the spatial location of memory by Karl Schlögel as well as texts by the French philosophers on the spatialization of personal history and intimate experience, especially by Marc Augé, Michel de Certeau and Gaston Bachelard. The topic of tolerance, respect and uncertainty in a society of diversity, especially concerning children and young people in dealing with diversity, will be in the foreground of the course. Selected factual and fictional texts in German will be analyzed, among them works by Jewish authors from Galicia, as well as the some German translations from Polish. Most important are the texts from and about Galicia, which were created from autobiographical memory. As Galicia has historically experienced several ruptures accompanied by a shift in power, causing emigration and flight from the region, autobiographical texts reveal the causes of prejudice leading to violence. On the other hand, they reflect moments of mutual enrichment between cultures. The role of children’s direct perception and discovery of the world should not be ignored in literary creation. The approaches should be interdisciplinary: literature, cultural studies, history and philosophy are considered.
