Aims, contents and method of the course

Which metalinguistic concepts of being a human lay at the foundation of language today? Due to the recent legal recognition of intersex people, the old binary understanding of gender, which only differentiates between woman and man is now being replaced or at least questioned on sociopolitical level, since it requires a third option, such as ”inter”, “diverse”, “different” or “open”. Simultaneously, the vocabulary is still characterized through the heterosexual binary genders with few terms for other genders or sexual orientations.
This proseminar aims to cover the following aspects of the issue: a gender critical analysis and deconstruction of the concept of hetero masculinity on a conceptual level (categories or hierarchies like animate : inanimate, human : animal , male : female) and direct analysis of prefeministic person references (nouns and adjectives). This should result in suggestions for new tangible definitions of the hetero-androcentric lemmas from a human focused perspective, which represents all.

Assessment and permitted materials

- frequent attendance (max. 3 unexplained absences)
- active contribution to discussions
- presentation (PowerPoint Presentation and/or handout)
- pro seminar paper (size: 15 pages continuous text)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grade derives from both frequent attendance as well as written and oral efforts, where a presentation must be held and the seminar paper must be positive.

- Feminist/Gender linguistic
- Lexicology/-graphy, semantic/word formation
- Linguistic argumentation based on the above-mentioned theories and movements
