Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to consolidate and deepen knowledge and skills in the French language, both written and spoken. In this course, we will work with a variety of authentic documents, mainly from the media and literature, with the aim of expanding vocabulary, acquiring nuances and idioms, and developing sensitivity to language registers and style.
In written and oral production, we will practice understanding and producing narrative and argumentative texts (stories and debates) as well as reports.
The grammar program covers the following points: tense agreement, indirect speech, relative clauses, negation, questions and imperatives, as well as personal pronouns in interrogative and imperative sentences.
Grammar points will be taught inductively using a corpus of examples that encourage metalinguistic reflection and the acquisition of grammatical terminology.
During this course, students will be required to give short oral presentations on a given topic, complete individual and group activities, and do online work.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade includes the results obtained in the following exams:
-a mid-semester grammar exam (10 points)
-an end-of-semester grammar exam (15 points)
-a mid-semester writing exam (story in the past tense) (20 points)
-an end-of-semester writing exam (story in the past tense) (20 points)
-a written exam at the end of the semester (statement of opinion on a short press article) (20 points)
-an oral comprehension exam (10 points)
-an oral exam at the end of the semester in the form of a conversation on a randomly selected social issue. (25 points)
The use of a monolingual French dictionary is only permitted for written production tests (narrative and opinion piece).
The use of any other tools, such as AI, is strictly prohibited.
The exam schedule will be posted on Moodle at the beginning of the semester.

This course corresponds to level B2 of the CEFR. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and skills corresponding to this level in a university context. In addition, they are expected to keep up to date with French-speaking current affairs during the semester and to complete appropriate personal work outside of class.
The course will be assessed on the results obtained in two exam sessions. The first will take place in the middle of the semester and the second at the end.
