Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an introduction to central themes and questions of Lusophone cinema. Based on selected films from various Portuguese-speaking contexts, students will discuss key topics such as cultural memory, colonial image politics, social self-reflection, gender and power relations, migration, and post-/decolonial revisions of history.

The aim of the course is to develop students’ ability to independently analyse films within their cultural and historical contexts and to foster an awareness of cinematic memory politics and forms of representation. Following a thematic introduction, students will engage critically with the selected films and relevant theoretical approaches, analysing aesthetic strategies and exploring methods of interpretation. Collective discussions and film talks will serve to deepen analytical skills and encourage critical reflection from multiple perspectives.

The course takes place in parallel with the Lusophone Film Series.
