Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment is designed to evaluate the students’ ability to use European Portuguese at CEFR level A2 in familiar contexts. It consists of:1. Continuous assessment (50% of the final grade):
- Participation in class activities, pair and group work, and guided exercises.
- Short oral and written tasks completed during the semester.
- Active engagement and effort in using Portuguese in classroom situations.2. Final examination (50% of the final grade)
- Oral component: short guided conversation, role-play, or presentation (5–10 minutes) to assess spoken competence and interaction.
- Written component: short texts, emails, or exercises demonstrating vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension skills.
- Listening comprehension: understanding of brief, slightly complex spoken texts.
-Reading comprehension: understanding of short authentic or semi-authentic texts.2. Assessment criteria
- Ability to communicate effectively in familiar, everyday situations.
- Accuracy and appropriateness of grammar and vocabulary at A2 level.

To achieve a positive assessment (Pass / Ausreichend, 4,0), students must fulfill the following minimum requirements:Attendance and participation:
- Attend at least 75–80% of total contact hours.
- Actively participate in class activities, including pair and group exercises.Partial performances / continuous assessment
- Complete all short oral and written tasks assigned during the semester.
- Demonstrate consistent effort in using European Portuguese for communication in classroom situations.Final examination
- Obtain at least 50% of total points in the combined oral, written, listening, and reading components.
- Demonstrate A2-level competence according to CEFR descriptors:
- Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information.
-Can write short, simple texts on familiar topics.
- Can understand the main points of short, clear spoken and written texts on familiar matters.Assessment of partial performances / individual tasks
Oral tasks are evaluated for communicative effectiveness, accuracy of grammar and vocabulary, and comprehensibility.
Written tasks are assessed for clarity, correctness, and appropriate use of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Listening and reading tasks are evaluated based on the ability to extract key information and understand main ideas.
Partial credit is awarded where communication is successful, even if there are occasional errors.Grading / Points

It is designed for absolute beginners with no prior contact with the Portuguese language. Students with some previous exposure to Portuguese may also benefit from the course by revisiting and consolidating fundamental grammatical, syntactic, and communicative structures.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• communicate effectively in everyday situations and in simple professional contexts;
• understand and produce short spoken and written texts with increasing accuracy and coherence;
• apply basic grammatical structures and an expanding vocabulary independently;
• demonstrate awareness of key cultural aspects of Portugal.
The course focuses on the following topics:
• Introduction to and consolidation of A1 and A2 grammatical structures;
• Acquisition and use of vocabulary related to everyday life, work, leisure, travel, and social interaction;
• Listening comprehension of gradually longer and more complex spoken texts;
• Reading comprehension of short authentic and semi-authentic texts;
• Organisation and production of short, coherent written texts (emails, descriptions, narratives);
• Oral interaction and participation in guided dialogues and role-plays;
• Cultural topics related to contemporary Portuguese society.
The course adopts a communicative, student-centred approach. Teaching methods include:
• interactive classroom activities (role-plays, guided dialogues, pair and group work);
• listening and reading comprehension exercises using authentic or semi-authentic materials;
• short writing tasks to practise vocabulary, grammar, and text organisation;
• continuous formative assessment and feedback to support language development;
• emphasis on active participation and practical communication in European Portuguese.
Students will develop basic structural and communicative competences that will enable them to understand and produce simple texts, interact in common social situations, and become familiar with key aspects of Portuguese culture and society.
Each unit includes a constant interactive approach, namely through exercises such as role-plays, dialogues, listening comprehension activities, guided conversations, and short written tasks. Authentic materials (e.g. audio recordings, texts, and real-life scenarios) will be used to promote immersion in European Portuguese. Active participation and continuous feedback are encouraged in order to support intensive and effective learning.
By the end of the semester, students are expected to achieve a A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
