Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course offers a discussion of selected topics in diachronic pragmatics, a relatively new discipline which analyses historical texts by means of analytical tools developed for synchronic pragmatics. The studied language materials will cover a wide spectrum of genres: letters, legal texts (depositions, wills), courtroom discourse, and literary genres (drama and prose). The criterion underlying the selection of the texts is their degree of orality, i.e. their closeness to the spoken language of the historical period. Thus the texts will be investigated for the occurrence of pragmatic characteristics, like deictics (pronouns and adverbs anchoring language to the extra-linguistic reality), presupposition, discourse particles, or implicature (something meant but not said).

The major concern of the course is to examine to what extent old (written) texts are amenable to pragmatic analysis originally designed for contemporary spoken data.
