Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar is centred around the upcoming production of Lee Hall's The Pitmen Painters (2008) at the Volkstheater (May 2009). Hall's play about a group of miners who literally become celebrities over night has a real-life connection (the actual paintings by these largely self-taught artists were exhibited during the play's extremely successful run at the National Theatre and will also be on show in Vienna during the spring).
Prominent historical figures featuring in the other 'bioplays' to be studied include: Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dalí in Terry Johnson's Hysteria (1993), Elvis Presley in Lee Hall's Cooking with Elvis (1998), and Max Reinhardt in Michael Frayn's Afterlife (2008).

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements for credit: regular attendance, active participation in class, PowerPoint presentation, research paper (20-25 pp.), written final test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

It is the aim of this course to introduce students to an extremely popular subgenre of contemporary drama and theatre. It will also be appropriate to explore the manifold 'local' (i.e. Austrian) connections in the plays to be studied.

Examination topics

class discussion of plays and selected scenes, student presentations on selected topics.

Reading list

A customised anthology will be available from 26 January 2009.
Additional material will be provided on an e-learning platform. Therefore, students are asked to familiarise themselves in advance with the Fronter platform; for introduction and self-guided tour, please see
