Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar offers students an insight into the history of English vocabulary and its historically accumulated strata, with special emphasis on phenomena connected with the "natural cycles" of words: on the one hand, incremental processes of word-formation and other forms of lexical enrichment (mostly by means of borrowing); on the other hand, phonetic attrition and loss of segmental substance, morphological obscuration, misanalysis, folk-etymological distortion, semantic change, and word death. Principles and methods of linguistic etymology will also be discussed and contrasted with popular views about the history of words. Participants will be required to prepare individual oral presentations (ca. 20 min.) and submit a seminar paper (6000-7000 words).
