Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Modern British drama is said to have started in 1956. In the half century since, it has developed into a variety of directions and shown great diversity. Yet British drama has also remained profoundly indebted to tradition, while at the same time responding to various continental influences.
The lecture will review the development of modern British drama up to the present. Special emphasis will be placed on the 'angry young men', absurd theatre, agit-prop, feminist theatre, postmodern reworkings of canonical plays, in-yer-face theatre and docu-drama. We will concentrate on the well-known playwrights, though which of them will eventually stand the test of time is difficult to foresee now. We will also review the London theatre scene and the influence of political and economic developments on British theatre.

There will be a reading list consisting of several full-length plays and various short excerpts which participants are required to study. There will be an end-test with questions about the lecture and the reading list.
