Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course will first provide an introduction to the structure of Old English, the oldest attested stage of the English language, spoken and written till the end of the 11th century. We will look at the major linguistic features of the language from both a synchronic and a diachronic point of view and acquire a competence in reading and analysing a variety of Old English texts, which will also be related to their extralinguistic and cultural settings. In the second part of the semester, each participant will carry out research into a particular linguistic structure on the basis of the prose Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, an important historical text surviving in a number of different manuscripts.
Assessment and permitted materials
Participants will be assessed on the basis of their active participation in class, a written mid-term test, a written research paper and the oral presentation of the main results of this paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The participants will first become familiar with the main structures of Old English, the main tools for analysing the language, and will acquire a proficiency in reading and analysing simple Old English texts. They will furthermore acquire the competence to carry out individual research projects focusing on the grammatical analysis of a particular Old English text.
Examination topics
The methods employed in the seminar are some introductory lecturing, discussion, group work, presentations, individual research project and project report (Seminararbeit)
