Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
The aim of the course is the overall result of the oral presentation, participation in the discussion, and the written version of the paper.

Content:
The seminar focuses on a variety of topics related to text linguistics and discourse analysis, i.e. the issues concerned with analysing text as a final product of human interaction vs. approaching a language situation as an ongoing process. These will encompass, among others, the following topics:
1. General, methodological issues (e.g. the relation of text linguistics and discourse analysis to the neighbouring disciplines: pragmatics, socio-linguistics, conversation analysis, etc.; the functions of language; various approaches to text and discourse);
2. The relation between culture and thought: On cultural relativity (Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and after);
3. The contrast between everyday communication, conversation and phatic communion;
4. On referring to linguistic and extra-linguistic reality: reference, deixis, anaphora.
5. Current issues in text and discourse:
a) online communication
b) argumentation and persuasion in the language of the media
c) male and female discourse
d) political correctness

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment:
An oral presentation of the selected paper topic (an abstract is required either as a power point or a hand-out), the participation in the class discussion, and the written version of the paper.
