Aims, contents and method of the course

- study and discussion of images and discourses of the mother and mothering in theories of the anthropocene: earth mother, mothering and human or non-human reproduction, mother and father figures, mother and child figures, feminist images and uses of the mother, gender politics and the mother, strategic uses of the mother figure, mothering and parenting, mother and body, mother and materiality
- methods from cultural studies, gender studies, anthropocene studies, narratology, genre studies, image studies and studies of literary figuration
- note: this course concerns theoretical texts mainly but there will be some reading of graphic narratives and short short fiction or novels

Assessment and permitted materials

presentation, 15 minutes, with handout 30%
final critical research paper, 3150-3850 words, due February 28 70%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- each requirement has to be fulfilled with 60% or grade 4 minimum for a pass
- attendance and participation
- paper proposal during last third of term
- (online) meeting with instructor to discuss paper proposal during last third of term
