Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this lecture class students will be given an insight into literature for young readers from the 19th to the 21st century. Starting with earlier examples of children’s literature via classics like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan or Little Women, we will cover some ground (via writers such as Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton) until we arrive at more recent examples of children's and young adult literature by writers such as Malorie Blackman or Alice Oseman, which also lend themselves as material for the EFL classroom. To come to a broader understanding of children’s literature and its contexts, we will apply critical theory, close reading and contextual analysis to these texts and will be looking at multimodal formats such as picturebooks and graphic novels.
Assessment and permitted materials
There will be a final written exam, based on the lectures and the required reading, consisting of a multiple choice part (60%) and short essay questions to choose from (40%).
