Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Australia has a rich history, sporting a long list of extraordinary female figures. However, depictions of Australia have often focused on the bush and been marked by an absence of women. This course shall address the cultural scripts that have often appeared as norms of Australian identity in film, art and literature and consider, critique, reformulate and debate the numerous ways gender, as a conceptual category, has been presented. Students will develop tools that they can apply for their own work in cultural studies. The course will provide practical methods of applying theoretical approaches to the issue of gender.
Assessment and permitted materials
There will be weekly presentations on the films and cultural texts as well as feedback reports for the other students. Students will write a paper at the end of the semester.
