Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Literature, in its myriads of formats and genres, can be a staple resource in a contemporary communicative EFL classroom. However, simply throwing books at young learners without any consideration of aims, methods and expected outcomes is not a promising approach. This course will focus on a principled (but no less joyful) approach to using contemporary literary materials (in a wider sense) at all stages of the EFL classroom.
At the end of this term, students will be able to
- reflect on their own experiences with literature as English learners
- get insight into some recent research into literature / reading education
- engage with recent literary texts that have potential for English language education
- select aims, materials and methods in accordance with the above and create engaging activities
Methods: explicit modelling, guided readings and discussions, video book reviews, creative writing, pair/group work for lesson plans and presentations

Assessment and permitted materials

Course evaluation is based on:
- class participation and recommendations on padlet (20%)
- creative writing assignment of 500-550 words (10%)
- YA video review (20%)
