Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims and contents
The course aims at developing a reflective and critical understanding of English Language Teaching in students through a consideration of the guiding principles underlying professional ELT. Within each of these key principles, a selection of thematic areas will be discussed covering:
- Principles of research-based teaching (topics: the relevance of ‘theory’ for teaching practice; EFL teaching as a profession)
- Principles of inclusive teaching (topics: multilingualism in the ELT classroom, individualization and differentiation, inclusion of neurodiverse learners in relation to dyslexia)
- Principles of technology-enhanced EFL teaching (topics: integrating New Media in language teaching)
- Principles of accountability in teaching (topics: connections between the CEFR, educational standards, ELP & EPOSTL, iKM+ and the standardized Matura)

In addition, the course will encourage in-depth engagement by students with a range of current approaches to EFL teaching, including:
- Presenting, trying out and evaluating selected approaches to EFL teaching
- Discussion of the ‘post-method era’
- Teaching English for Specific Purposes.

A mixture of methods will be employed, including
- discussions and pair/group work in class
- short presentations by the lecturer

Assessment and permitted materials

Course work (regular reading & Moodle assignments, etc.); three portfolio tasks; two-part written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Assessment:
Part 1) Course work (20%)
Part 2) Portfolio tasks: ESP (20%); New Media (5% + 20%)
Part 3) Written exam: closed book + open book (35%)

Minimum requirements:
- Regular attendance (max. 2 absences)
- Two out of the three parts as well as the overall score must be positive; all three portfolio tasks have to be submitted.

Grading scale:
1 (sehr gut) 100-90%; 2 (gut) 89-80%; 3 (befriedigend), 79-70%; 4 (genügend) 69-60%; 5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%

Examination topics

Three portfolio tasks, 2-part written exam, course work, as listed above, based on topics covered in class (see Ziele, Inhalte und Methode/course schedule). Details on assignments given in class and on Moodle.
