Aims, contents and method of the course

In international discussions about dystopian literature, the prevailing view is that it sketches scenarios in which current political, economic, social, or ecological developments culminate in a future catastrophe. It is often claimed that one can properly speak of dystopian literature only since the postwar period; earlier examples are considered precursors.
The lecture takes Hungarian culture and literature as its starting point and demonstrates a centuries-old tradition of dystopian writing that consistently scrutinizes its own present. It also addresses the literary engagement with the Nazi concentration camps and thus Holocaust literature. The oeuvres to be discussed include, among others, those of Imre Kertész and László Krasznahorkai.
This perspective enables a comprehensive and precise definition of the genre “dystopian literature.”

Written exam.

For positive completion of the course, more than 50% of the possible points must be achieved in the final written examination.
Very good: 87 - 100 %
Good: 75 - 86,99 %
Satisfactory: 63 - 74,99 %
Sufficient: 50 - 62,99 % %
Insufficient: 49,99 - 0 %

Examination topics

Course content (lecture, PowerPoint presentations & primary and secondary literature).
There is no script for the lecture; the students are required to take their own notes and to work independently on the compulsory or recommended secondary literature.
