Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

What is space in literature, and how is it shaped by borders – political, cultural, linguistic, and symbolic? How do literary narratives imagine, contest, or reconfigure borders, and how do these representations influence collective and individual perceptions of Central Europe? Can literature contribute to the construction of spatial imaginaries and regional identities? If so, how?
The course is structured around these primary questions. Its aim is to introduce students to key theoretical approaches to space, borders, and imagination in literary and cultural studies, and to demonstrate how these concepts can be applied in the analysis of literary narratives. Particular attention will be paid to Hungarian and Central European contexts, where shifting borders, multilingualism, migration, and historical ruptures have played a decisive role in shaping literary representations of space.
The course will be based primarily on examples from Hungarian and Central European prose and essays, with supplementary references to comparative materials from the broader region. Texts will be discussed in terms of their narrative strategies, symbolic geographies, and historical contexts, with an emphasis on how literature reflects and reshapes experiences of borders and spatial belonging.
The course is a lecture held in English.
